(Dr. Joy Angela DeGruy/Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome) Why Black People Act The Way They Do

Dr. DeGruy's social science research led to the book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing.

It addresses the residual impact of trauma on African descendants in the Americas.

It lays the groundwork for understanding how the past influences the present and opens up the discussion about how we can eliminate attitudes, beliefs, and maladaptive (non-productive) behaviors and how we can build upon the strengths gained from the past to heal today's injuries.

The Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome Study Guide helps individuals and organizations understand functional and dysfunctional attitudes and behaviors transmitted to us through multiple generations.

It broadens the discussion and looks into the implications raised in the P.T.S.S. book and provides practical tools to help transform negative attitudes and behaviors into positive ones. More

What is "P.T.S.S."?
Oprah Winfrey with Dr. Joy DeGruy
While African Americans managed to emerge from chattel slavery [considered property rather than human] and the very oppressive "post-slavery" decades that followed with great strength and resiliency, they did not emerge unscathed.

Slavery by Europeans [which was a new kind of "slavery" never seen in the world, a permanent condition based on the new social-construct of "race" rather than debt] produced centuries of physical, psychological, and spiritual injuries.

The fascinating book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing lays the groundwork for understanding how the past has influenced the present.

It opens up a discussion that leads to healing -- for those suffering from implicit bias, which is nearly all of us, to out and out "racists" who experience guilt through cognitive dissonance that means avoiding seeing blacks as human even now. Here is how we can use the strengths gained to heal. More

JUDAS: troubling history of the renegade apostle

Peter Stanford is a British writer, editor, journalist, and presenter. He is known for his biographies and writings on religion and ethics. His most recent book is Judas: The Troubling History of the Renegade Apostle.
ABOUT THE BOOK: In this fascinating historical and cultural biography, writer and broadcaster Peter Stanford deconstructs that most vilified of Bible characters, Judas Iscariot.

Rabbi/kidnapper Mendel Epstein (AP)
Judas the Jew (Yahuda the Yahudi) famously "betrayed" Jesus (Y'shua) with a kiss. Beginning with the gospel accounts, Stanford explores 2,000 years of cultural and theological history to investigate how the very name Judas -- which sounds just like "Jewish" -- came to be synonymous with betrayal and, ultimately, human evil.

Hey, Y'shua, let me betray you with a kiss. - D'uh, Yazuda, isn't that what we agreed? - Yes.
.
But as Stanford points out, there has long been a counter-current of thought that suggests that Judas might in fact have been victim of a terrible injustice:

Central to Jesus’ mission on earth (to save humanity by magic/human sacrifice/scapegoating) was his death and resurrection. And for there to have been a death, there had to be a betrayal. This thankless role fell to Judas.

Bob Dylan: Was Judas on God's side?
So should we, in fact, be grateful to Judas for his role in the divine drama of our human salvation [going to heaven rather than actual "salvation"/liberation, namely, freedom from all further suffering and rebirth, as taught by the historical Buddha and the Dharmic religions]?

"You’ll have to decide," as Bob Dylan sang in the 1960s, "Whether Judas Iscariot had God on his side."

I'm Jewy Jewison a Judas (Charlie Hebdo)
An essential but doomed character in the Passion ("suffering") narrative, and thus the entire story of Christianity, Judas and the betrayal he symbolizes continue to play out in much larger cultural histories, speaking as he does to our deepest fears about friendship, betrayal, and the problem of evil.

Judas, the ultimate traitor, or the ultimate scapegoat? This is a compelling portrait of Christianity’s most troubling and mysterious character. More + AUDIO

American Reform rabbis warn of alienation from Israel Recent gathering of American Reform rabbis in Jerusalem was meant to celebrate the small gains the liberal Jewish movement has made in Israel in recent years. But a series of comments by Israeli officials denigrating the group marred the event, reflecting an awkward relationship that many fear is alienating the world's second-largest Jewish community from Israel (AP).

"Black Wall Street" (historical film)

Whites won't stand for a black success story
Wisdom Quarterly Wiki edit
Greenwood is a neighborhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As one of the most successful and wealthiest black communities in the United States during the early 20th Century, it was popularly known as America's "Black Wall Street."

That is, it was until the [FBI sabotaged it and inspired what is now referred to as the] Tulsa race riot of 1921, in which white residents massacred black residents and razed the neighborhood within hours.

The riot was one of the most devastating massacres in the history of U.S. race relations, destroying the once thriving Greenwood community.

Within five years after the massacre, surviving residents who chose to remain in Tulsa rebuilt much of the district.

They accomplished this despite the opposition of many white Tulsa political and business leaders and punitive rezoning laws enacted to prevent reconstruction. It resumed being a vital black community until segregation was overturned by the Federal Government during the 1950s and 1960s. Desegregation encouraged blacks to live and shop elsewhere in the city, causing Greenwood to lose much of its original vitality. Since then, city leaders have attempted to encourage other economic development activity nearby. More
  • (Chazaq Ban Yasharahla) We need to learn the true heritage of black, aboriginal, and other humans on this world. Blacks are the original everything on this planet. "Blacks" did not only come from Africa but from Europe before others (Moorish art). They were in North-, Central-, and South America before whites (as Olmecs, Natchez, Choctaw, Black Charibs of the Caribbean). Were they the Judeo-Christian tribal God's "chosen people" (African Hebrew Israelites, "Israel" being located entirely in Africa). And blacks once reigned over the whole earth).
  • (LoveInspired7) These [blanks] did a d*mn good job of keeping this out of our history books... I'm ashamed to say that I HAD NO IDEA that something like this ever happened until earlier this year, no clue. I found out after seeing a a Facebook post. Who will believe how many of our brothers and sisters had NO IDEA this ever happened?
  • (Phillip Nichols) Also look up Rosewood, Florida. Whenever you hear "race riot" prior to the 1960s, it means whites killing, looting, lynching people of color, usually those of African descent. For example, the New York City draft riots of the 1860s, Memphis, Tennessee lynchings of 1870s, and so on. Just look up these and other "race riots" to see what I mean.

Column_default Albert Woodfox turned 69 years old Friday. He also was released from prison that day after serving 43 years in solitary confinement, more time than anyone in U.S. history. “Quite a birthday gift,” Woodfox told us on the “Democracy Now!” news hour, in his first televised interview after gaining his freedom. Woodfox is a living testament to the resilience of the human spirit when subjected to the cruel and unusual punishment of solitary. His case also serves as a stark reminder of the injustice that pervades the American criminal-justice system.
